Call for open mind to south-east transport plans

Tuesday, 7 June 2005. 15:09 (AEDT)Tuesday
*
The Limestone Coast Regional Development Board is calling for stakeholders to remain open to all transport infrastructure proposals for lower south-east South Australia.
*
Significant pressure is expected to be placed on roads in the region in the next few years, when millions of tonnes of bluegum is harvested.
*
Support for a "border road" against a rail solution seems to be gaining speed, with Grant District Council and the federal Member among backers.
*
But development board chief executive officer Grant King says individuals should reserve their judgments for the time being.
*
"Until we understand how the whole transport needs are met taking into account all the factors, then it's premature to speculate one project against another," he said.
*
"I think by having people canvass one project over another or equally have people criticise one project against another just sends the wrong signals to the political masters as to what is our agreed position."
